Public Housing is Everybody's Business

A strong public housing sector provides stable long term secure accommodation for 25% of a person’s income for people who cannot afford to buy a home. It helps to decrease rents at the lower end of the market, reduce prices for first home buyers and frees up tens of millions of dollars that is currently used to keep a roof over people’s heads.
Join us during Febuary to highlight the issue of public housing to the greatest number of people on the steps of the Victorian Parliament.

January & February 2019

This event marks the public execution of two indigenous freedom fighters on the 20th of January 1842. After a ten year long campaign by the Tunnerminnerwait and the Maulboyheener Commemoration Committee, the Melbourne City Council built a monument to these two men on the spot they were executed. Many members of PIBCI were and continue to be members of the commemoration committee and many more PIBCI members attend this yearly commemoration.

By holding the yearly commemoration we acknowledge the traditional owners of the lands we live on. We acknowledge the brutality of the colonisation process. We begin a reconciliation journey to address the unresolved issues that still exist between Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Australians.

After listening to the guest speakers we will walk down to the Queen Victoria Markets to Tunnerminnerwait and the Maulboyheener's burial site.
Please bring flowers for this memorial.

Public Housing is Everybody's Business rallies

This campaign is a continuation of the successful 10 day vigil in November 2018, held on the steps of the Victorian parliament.

Public housing should be an option for all Australians who cannot afford to access housing in the private market place not just those who are destitute and homeless.

Where: On the steps of the Victorian Parliament – Corner Spring and Bourke St. Melbourne

When: 6:00 - 8:30 am
Why 6:00 am? This is the time Melbourne's homeless are thrown out of shelters in Bourke Street; one hundred meters from the Victorian Parliament.
